What Is Classified as a “Catastrophic” Injury?
Although there is no universal legal or medical definition that specifically categorizes what physical trauma may be classified as “catastrophic” injury, the American Medical Association and the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research offer two helpful descriptions. The AMA considers a catastrophic injury to be a severe injury to the spine, spinal cord, brain or skull. The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research classifies injuries as catastrophic if they result in death, permanent severe functional disability or severe head or neck trauma.
The following may be considered catastrophic injuries:
- Spinal cord injury, including spinal fractures
- Paralysis, including paraplegia or quadriplegia
- Serious head trauma, including concussions and skull fractures
- Brain injuries caused by blunt force trauma or a lack of oxygen or blood to the brain
- Amputation or loss of limb
- Multiple bone fractures
- Eye injuries
- Severe burns
Any of the above injuries may cause permanent physical and emotional damage.
